A Note About The Fiscal Cliff

See Update at the bottom!!

Jeez, this is beyond the pale.  The theater in this mess is more than one can take.  This is why I haven’t written much about it recently.

The Repubs painted themselves into a corner.  Politically, they lost the rhetoric battle.  The Dems, for their part, have overplayed their hand.  For the most part, the Dems are saying a small tax increase, which amounts to nothing in terms of revenue, but will have a slight negative effect on our economy, or the largest tax increase since WWII.  They don’t seem to care which.  They’ve offered little or nothing concrete about the real problem, our spending.

For the Repubs part, they seem focused on Social Security as if that’s the only spending problem we have.  Realistically, Repubs aren’t going to get the spending cuts they want.  The Dems are not going to get Repubs to vote for tax increases in any large numbers.

What the Dems should have done, was to get behind Boehner’s plan.  But, they didn’t because that would have made Boehner look good.  They placed party over country……. again.

The ideologically locked Repubs who refuse to vote for any tax increase are cutting off their noses to spite their face.  By rejecting Boehner’s plan, they are going to see the largest tax increase in the US since WWII.  This was the stupid compromise they agreed to begin with.  Did they, and do they think Obama wouldn’t happily raise taxes on everyone?  You made your bed, now lie in it the best you can.

Look, I’m as big as an ideologue as anyone.  Tax increases in this day and age are bad for the economy. There’s nothing else to add to that statement.  But, that’s not the question in front of us today.  The question is a tax increase or a larger tax increase.  You’re to dumbasses that agreed to this stupid idea, be adults and deal with it.  I’m disgusted by both parties and their refusal to put the American people first.  The Repubs are playing right into the hands of a very committed socialist.  QUIT GIVING ZERO THE ROPE TO HANG US WITH, YOU IMBECILES!!!!

To recap.  The Repubs are playing this game as total fools.  They’re not evil, just stupid.  The Dems are playing this game as total tools.  They’d rather harm all Americans than to give Repubs any political ground.  They’re not stupid, but they are evil.

Update!!!  Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell has worked day and night on this problem.  HuffPo reports…….

“I’m concerned about the lack of urgency here. We all know we’re running out of time,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), complaining that he had worked into the night Saturday to make an offer to the Democrats, but hadn’t received a response.

“There is far too much at stake for political gamesmanship,” he said, suggesting that Democrats were playing games. “The sticking point appears to be a willingness, an interest or frankly the courage to close the deal,” McConnell said.

“I want everyone to know I’m willing to get this done, but I need a dance partner,” McConnell added, saying that he had reached out to Vice President Joe Biden in hopes of breaking the logjam.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) acknowledged that the sides were stuck.

“We’ve been trying to come up with some counteroffer to my friend’s proposal,” Reid said. “We’ve been unable to do that,” he continued. “I’ve had a number of conversations with the president, and at this stage, we’re not able to make a counteroffer.”

How can you not be able to have a counter offer?  WTF does that mean?  The way it’s suppose to work is, McConnell makes an offer, the Dems can accept it or say, “No, we want X,Y, or Z.”  It isn’t that hard to articulate what you want.  That is, unless you don’t want to find a solution to the problem, which has been the Dem’s plan all along.

In the mean time the Repubs cave further to the Dems who won’t work with them….

UPDATE: 4:30 p.m. — Republican senators leaving a GOP conference meeting Sunday afternoon told reporters that they are dropping chained CPI from their fiscal cliff proposal.

When you are driving over a cliff, how fast you go over does not matter in the long run. You will still crash and burn – which is Obama’s plan all along.

Those repubs were elected on the no tax pledge. At least some in congress appear to retain their ethics.

I am at a total loss why anyone would try to negotiate with Obama or even pretend to. He has never negotiated with anyone in his life. He either submits (to the MB) or rolls all over the other party. (Israel, repubs)

The hallmark of an authoritarian personality. The only two things you can do is grab your marbles and go, or try to sabotage everything that guy wants. There is no middleground.

That should have been clear from the moment it became clear that the soviet style agitprop posters of the Dear Leader were NOT meant as a parody.

I liked this note about the fiscal cliff. Figuratively going to the boss and asking for a small raise won’t cut it.

The Republicans could do worse than to publish this everywhere.

    you can’t pass something you don’t have….
how long has it been since democrats passed a budget???
You can’t balance something you don’t have either..

But they can pass “we have to hurry up and pass it so you can read what’s in it”…..
…with absolutely no way to pay for it

without robbing from medicare…and it’s still not enough

Yeh, I’ll have an update to this in a minute!

Last budget passed the Senate was FY 2009’s. That is right 4 years ago. It has been on autopilot since. Just what the Dems want. Baked into the baseline massive increases, from which any reduction would be ‘balancing the budget on the backs of the poor’ … yeah right.

“…a retroactive deal in January looks more likely. ”

Just to keep everyone jittery and make rational decisions impossible.

I think it’s that they know we leaped off the cliff years ago. All that’s left now is to see how deep of a hole we make at the bottom of the canyon.

I think that sums it up nicely. The Dems and Repubs couldn’t solve a two piece jigsaw puzzle if they had to work cooperatively to figure it out.
