Orwellian Totalitarian State Strikes Again!

Michelle Obama’s Healthy and Hunger-Free Kids Act causes children to leave lunch hungry.

EAGnews.org published a recent article about how the Obama administration’s new calorie limitations for school lunches are leaving many American students hungry (especially high school athletes).

The federal government is using its new power to impose “calorie maximums for school lunches – 650 calories for elementary-schoolers, 700 for middle-schoolers and 850 for high-schoolers,” reports The Star-Telegram.

Those are deplorable limitations our children.  Look, maybe some of our children are over weight.  But, it isn’t the government’s place to make that determination.  Each child is unique in their nutritional needs.  Even if we decided the government should play a role in our children’s health, they’re going about it in exactly the wrong way.  Anyone with an IQ above plant life understands that our children are too sedentary today.  It isn’t that they eat too much.  It is that they don’t exercise enough.  Look at the caloric servings!  These imbeciles are mandating that our children can’t exercise!

She feels especially bad for high school athletes who rapidly burn through calories.  “Two ounces of protein won’t cut it for high school athletes,” she notes.

Two ounces of protein?  WTF?  No wonder the kids can’t play football today!  What’s wrong with these people?  Why do they feel the need to micromanage our children’s lives?  Yes, I know it’s just warm up for what they have in store for the rest of us.   I guarantee you two ounces of protein for athletes will destroy performance.  BTW, here is the USDA recommendations for caloric intake.  Again, these are just guidelines.  Each persons metabolism is different.

As we can see, even if the child gets 3 meals a day, 850 calories is inadequate for an active adolescent male.  It’s barely adequate for females.

A question.  How many families eat breakfast in the morning anymore?  I did growing up.  I don’t much, anymore.  So, are most of our kids getting only two meals?  I know some places serve breakfast in school now.   All of this comes into play when trying to provide the needs for growing children.  The point is, we want to ensure we are providing enough, not that we’re defining down to the lowest common denominator.  This is stupid.

Here’s the worse part of the story…….

Even though some kids may be leaving the lunch room hungry, the new Obama-imposed rules prohibit students from receiving additional helpings, even when there’s food left over.

“We’re told we cannot serve seconds, that we cannot save leftover food for the next day. We must throw it away,” our source says. “What a waste for hungry kids who aren’t getting enough to eat to begin with.”

Don’t throw away food if you don’t have to.  Stop it!

Ahhhhh…you have identified 1/2 of the problem.

[ ” Michelle Obama and bureaucrats in Washington, DC, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack offered an incredible response: Let them eat snacks!“]

For many kids – The school lunch is their MAIN MEAL of the day.

Michelle Obama and bureaucrats in Washington, DC should check the poverty numbers and the unemployed / under employed roles.

If they can’t afford a good breakfast or dinner … ummmmm how do they afford snacks?

This is like Airport security every body gets hassled. It’s time to start racial profiling if you look like an Arab and your name is Mohammad you must expect to be checked. If your fat or an over weight kid you get the low cal treatment, not the normal, skinny or sports inclined kids, that’s political correctness gone nut’s. Yeah I know I.m an extremist, so what, it’s time for a bit of Canadian common sense!

I’d just be happy if our government found something else to obsess about other than our children’s lunch. As you point out, there are probably other pressing issues to worry about other than putting little Johnny on a diet whether he needs it or not.

      • kim2ooo says:

Michelle Obama would have nothing to do then. She doesn’t have enough common sense , as I’ve just proved about the Main Meal of the day.

I’ve often wondered why each administration seems to want to have their spouse “do something”. No one elected them. Their job is to not get in the way.

Nobody even knows the husband of Angela Merkel. (Yes she has one. No, he’s never been seen. And he doesn’t make a noise.)

    Hunger Games.

I graduated high school at 168 pounds. I ran cross country. If I wanted to do a 10k training run in, say, 41 minutes, I’d expect to burn 750-800 calories at practice alone…not counting warm up or cool down. We never did much more than 10k, but if I was a coach I’d have my team doing long runs up to 10 miles. At a 7:30/mile pace, I’d expect to burn about 1200 calories on that run. That’s about 1.5x the amount that I’d be allowed to have for lunch. Heck, if this forced requirement sticks around for years we’re going to find that ourselves with overweight short people, particularly girls while simultaneously having malnutritioned tall guys, LOL.

I can understand them trying to address this problem…but the way they’re doing it is wrong IMO. Exercise is a better way to do it, as you’ve alluded to.

It’s bizarre. It’s like they’re trying to ensure unhealthy and inactive children. I ran X-country in college for a couple of years. In HS I was always trying to bulk up for football. I could never get enough food in me. Some of us were never suppose to be bulky. I think I graduated at 140.

It’s about fairness. If other children around the world are starving, then so should ours. This is how the mentally ill operate.

  6. ThePhDScientist says:

“It’s not that our children eat too much…” Umm no that’s exactly the problem with millions of our children and their parents…! Eating too many empty calories and being sedentary! Learn some facts before simply spouting off some conservative nonsense! 1 out of every 3 kids is obese or overweight because American adults don’t teach their kids proper eating habits.

BTW 850 calories for lunch is not starving anyone. There are 2 more meals an usually snacks as part of the average persons day! So not sure what your point was there.

    • DirkH says:

Where have you been? Living it up at the foodstamps bash?

    • suyts says:

I take it you were never an athlete. You have no idea how many calories it takes for an active adolescent. As I stated, that chart low-balls the needs.

I didn’t realize the nutritional needs of our children was a political issue. I don’t understand how you can partially agree with me and be so disagreeable. Maybe you need to move your nose out of socialist weekly and understand things about the dynamics of family dining and why. And then understand that when a person becomes active, many of their eating habits change from unhealthy to health in response to a body’s needs.

    • LLAP says:

@PhD: “Umm no that’s exactly the problem with millions of our children and their parents…! Eating too many empty calories and being sedentary!”

That may be true, but it is due to parents not taking responsibility for their children. Nanny state do-gooders who want to regulate what children eat and how much they eat will only encourage parents to take even less responsibility than they do now.
