More Absurdities From The Left

WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH  O’Brien would be proud of this bit of lunacy.

“Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.”—–Voltaire

Have you heard the latest?  Last night, after my 12th beer or so, I’d stumbled across some silliness.  I was going to write about it, but, I figured I was a bit too woozy for such an undertaking.  I woke this morning thinking I must have dreamt this fascinating invention of the left.  The left would have you believe that Obama is a frugal guy and that spending under Obama is flat.  There’s some real statistical wizardry at play there.  But, just look!

See?  Obama isn’t a big spender!  But, why don’t we look at the actual numbers?  We can see total federal spending here.

Now, one of the central tenets in the argument that Obama isn’t a big spender is that FY2009 was part of the Bush administrations budget. (notice the sharp rise during 2009)  And, this is true…… sort of.  But, people with an operating synapse north of their neck would recall a couple of things.  First of all, the Bush administration didn’t lobby for or pass the stimulus bill which took effect in 2009.  Nor, was the Wall street bailout complete.  We recall that Obama insisted Bush release the second half of the bailout money in Jan of 2009.  That was discretionary spending.  In other words, Obama chose to spend it, but he wasn’t compelled to do so.  So, what does 2009 look like without Obama’s spending?

Let’s look at actual numbers instead of pretty graphs for a moment.

          2005 2471.96 a
2006 2655.05 a
2007 2728.69 a
2008 2982.54 a
2009 3517.68 a
2010 3456.21 a
2011 3603.06 a
2012 3795.55 b
2013 3803.36 b
2014 3883.1 b
2015 4059.87 b
2016 4328.84 b
2017 4531.72 b

(a=actual     b= absurd estimates)

Recall the 1/2 of the bailout which totaled $350 billion and the stimulus which was $875 billion.  Now, we didn’t spend all of the stimulus money in 2009.  We only spent $265 billion of it in 2009. (pdf see table S-11)  Now, we’ll give Obama a mulligan on the $782 billion Obama spent on discretionary defense and security spending in 2009, even though had he actually followed through with some of his promises, it would have been much less.  But, outside the ARRA(stimulus package), all told, including the stimulus, it was about $435 billion what with the creation of unelected czars and whatnot.

So, in reality we should subtract that from Bush’s $3.5 trillion FY2009.  Because a) Bush didn’t spend that money, Obama did.  And b) this was discretionary spending.   Obama chose to spend that money.  I’m not making a judgment as to the value of the spending, I’m simply pointing out that Obama spent it and not Bush, so one can’t assign that spending to Bush in FY2009.  Let’s see.  $350 bil + $435 bil = $875 billion of spending which Obama chose to do in FY2009.  $3517 billion -$875 billion = $ 2642 billion.  Anything above that number is Obama’s spending.

Now, this doesn’t seem fair, either, because it assumes that Bush (or anyone else) wouldn’t have spent some of that discretionary spending.  But, the stimulus is uniquely Obama’s.  Bush’s spending increases in the 3 prior years averaged $170 billion.  So, let’s add that to our $2982.54 billion Bush spent in 2008.  We get federal spending in FY 2009 without Obama’s unique spending to come to $3152 billion.  So, we’ll place that number into FY2009 and see how Obama did in 2010 and 2011, and even include some absurd estimates of Obama’s spend thrift ways.   Money spent which we can assign to Bush in FY2009 was $3152 billion.  In FY 2010 we see Obama spent $3456 billion.  That’s a 9.6% increase of federal spending in one year!!  Last year Obama calmed himself (because of a Republican house) and only increased spending by $150 billion.   Which is a 4.34% increase over 2010, and, a 14.3% increase over 2009 had Obama not spent all of that money in 2009.  But, if you don’t like the comparisons to FY2009, then just look at the spending of last year to the estimates of this year.  We see an expected increase of $192 billion over $3603 billion which is an increase of 5.3%.  Only in the delusional minds of leftists would they even attempt to make a person believe that 9.6% +4.3% + 5.3% = 1.4% increase.  Even if you don’t accept the entirely reasonable discussion of FY2009 spending, we see that Obama’s projected spending this year is 9.82% increase over his FY2010 budget!

Don’t know about your state, but here, the outgoing governor does indeed pass along a budget. However the incoming governor has to make sure it balances. Over the past 5 years, that has meant that the incoming governor has twice had to slash spending to bring the budget in line. It is his responsibility, not his predecessors, to make sure the dollars and cents are in line. And they have done so.

The 2 problems with the latest meme are:

#1: Bush proposed it, Obama spent it. And no one forced him to. It is his deficit.
#2: Porkulus was not part of the Bush Budget. It was not proposed by Bush. It was proposed and spent by Obama.

Beyond the stupidity of the MSM and their parroting of the numbers, lies one unavoidable fact that should be thrown back at them. Porkulus was touted as a stimulus – a one time shot for the economy. However, once it passed, it became part of the BASELINE budgeting. In other words, the increase in spending was built in to the numbers, so that the elimination of Porkulus would be described as a “cut”.

I have been saying that for 3 years now. And for 3 years, I have been ridiculed (which bothers me not) by the liberals for saying it. Obama apparently is on my side.

They’re taking a play on the numbers. Since federal spending was already hugely increased by (well basically every President of the last 30 years) they’re making the point that Obama, as a percentage, has increased it the least. It’s not exactly telling the whole story, but there is nothing wrong with the chart.
