Holy crap! These people can’t find anything else to crap themselves over, they have to misinterpret studies and regurgitate old bits of massive stupidity.
They’ve entirely lost any sense of context and causality. And, they’ve started to believe their own idiocy.
The rapid rise in sea levels could cause a dramatic increase in volcanic eruptions, according to a new study.
The study, published in the journal Geology, found that during periods of rapid climate change over the last million years, the rapid melting of continental glaciers and the resulting sea-level rise eventually increased volcanic eruptions as much as fold.
Sigh, that’s wrong on so many levels. The recent supposed rise in sea levels is not rapid, and the rate is decreasing. You’d think that the link would take you to the study, but it doesn’t. It takes you to an old “Live Science” piece that quotes a quack and some very vapid thoughts.
Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and landslides are some of the additional catastrophes that climate change and its rising sea levels and melting glaciers could bring, a geologist says.
McGuire’s speculations of increased geological activity have not yet been published in a journal, but he has written an article about them published in the Guardian Unlimited.
As the ice melts, the crust below no longer has anything sitting on top of it, and so can rebound fairly rapidly (by geological standards). (This rebounding is actually occurring now as a result of the end of the last Ice Age: The retreat of massive ice sheets from the northern United States and Canada has allowed the crust in these areas to bounce back.)
Areas of rebounding crust could change the stresses acting on earthquake faults and volcanoes in the crust.
Good heavens! The ice is holding the earth together!!!! LMAO!!! HuffPo does, in it’s fourth paragraph throw this out……
The findings were based only on natural changes in climate, so it’s not clear whether human-caused climate change would have the same impact, Jegen said. And if it did, she added, the effect wouldn’t be seen for centuries.
Yeh, human caused…. whatever. It took a minute, but I found the study they were referencing but not linking…..
A rigorous detection of Milankovitch periodicities in volcanic output across the Pleistocene-Holocene ice age has remained elusive. We report on a spectral analysis of a large number of well-preserved ash plume deposits recorded in marine sediments along the Pacific Ring of Fire. Our analysis yields a statistically significant detection of a spectral peak at the obliquity period. We propose that this variability in volcanic activity results from crustal stress changes associated with ice age mass redistribution. In particular, increased volcanism lags behind the highest rate of increasing eustatic sea level (decreasing global ice volume) by 4.0 ± 3.6 k.y. and correlates with numerical predictions of stress changes at volcanically active sites. These results support the presence of a causal link between variations in ice age climate, continental stress field, and volcanism.
For those not familiar with Milankovitch cycles, a fellow named Milanković mathematically theorized that variations in eccentricity, axial tilt, and precession of the Earth’s orbit determined climatic patterns on Earth through orbital forcing.
In days past, we used to prevent people with a diminished mental capacity to breed with one another. Now, in the US, it is illegal to prevent the mating. Articles like this one in HuffPo is the result of discontinuing and reversing the practice. /half sarc
