This is purely for entertainment purposes. I have no idea what’s going on with Anthony or WUWT. But, because speculation is inevitable, I thought I’d give an avenue for such processes. For those who don’t know, from Anthony’s WUWT site…
WUWT publishing suspended – major announcement coming
Posted on July 27, 2012 by Anthony Watts
Something’s happened. From now until Sunday July 29th, around Noon PST, WUWT will be suspending publishing. At that time, there will be a major announcement that I’m sure will attract a broad global interest due to its controversial and unprecedented nature.
To give you an idea as to the magnitude of this event, I’m suspending my vacation plans. I weighed the issue, and decided (much to my dismay) this was more important. I can go on vacation trips another time, but this announcement is not something I can miss now and do later.
Media outlets be sure to check in to WUWT on Sunday around 12PM PST and check your emails.
If you wish to be automatically notified of the updates, click on the “Follow Blog via Email” button about midway down the right sidebar.
Comments are closed, and I will not be responding to emails until Sunday.
Thank you for your consideration and patience – Anthony Watts
So, speculate away….. alien abduction? Watts and Mann teaming up on a paper? Hansen confesses to just making crap up? IPCC has asked him to head one of the WGs? Romney asking him to be VP?…… what’s your guess?

I’m thinking Phil and Jim et al are going to announce that they’re tired of just making stuff up and will let Anthony track our temps from now on.
Ooooooooo ha ha ha
I was going to growl at you after I read your first line, as I really have no clue on what the announcement will be. However, I like this one. Maybe not Phil and Jim, but given his work, maybe someone is commissioning him to be the keeper of the raw data.
Climategate: Part Three?
It would have to be bigger than that! I don’t recall him suspending for one or two.
True
One and two were unannounced strikes, right? The password for three might be arriving to certain folks who know how to use it ??

He [ Mr Watts ] could need the time to digest what’s in them?
Hey James! It would be bigger if Anthony were the sole recipient of the email, or if it were the email locked behind that password. Just sayin’.
Whatever it is, I will stay tuned…
Unless “deep throat” has contacted him about it.
Actually,my thoughts
No tickle from Tallbloke, though after what happened last time…
Yep!
Anthony said “unprecedented” so it can’t be FOIA.
It can’t be (just) a new paper. Desn’t warrant suspension.
I believe someone from the alarmist side with first hand info and evidence (emails, letters etc) has had a bout of conscience and turned.
Contacting general media is too hard and complicated. Contacting WUWT with its popularity, influence and reach makes sense.
One of the ‘team’ turning is unprecedented.
Well, yes, it would be. Good to see you, Baa!
M.M. has been detained by skeptics at an undisclosed location, and waterboarded, resulting in numerous spectacular revelations. Transcripts to be published on Sunday, July 29!!
Or SLT.
Oh my…….
I was driving this morning and thinking about the drought and its importance to people’s livelihoods and, not only that, but other extreme weather events, and wondering if the U.S. government has an alternate temperature record (as opposed to the one that’s been fiddled, or fiddled with) that they use for real purposes.
I’m hoping it’s something to do with this, with a change being long overdue and all that.
Sounds like it might be bigger though. Climategate 3 ? Mann’s e-mails leaked ?
If it is a climategate 3 type of event, for Anthony to suspend like he has, they would have to contain information even more damning than climategate one and two, which, I couldn’t possibly imagine what that could be.
He mentions “global interest” in scale – Yeppers! Pretty big
Must have gotten advance notice of a pending announcement coming Sunday – my guess is CERN.

Honestly, I’m thinking along those lines as well.
Hmmmmmmmmmm…That’s Interesting
Our Sunday would be CERNS ????

Hey Kim! Now you are reading my mind…
If WUWT were involved in a scandal, then Anthony would not be in control of the message (lamestream media would have his head on a stick by now).
Nope. Something good is happening, and it’s big enough that Anthony cancelled his vacation and stopped blogging until HE makes the announcement when he’s good and ready – Sunday.
I think, you are Spot On!
This is of course very strange. Even if it is Climategate 3 – and make no mistake, the next one is speculated to be the real biggie; the first two being strong warnings to scientists to be more open, the third one supposedly to blow the whole thing open (including names of high profile figures involved in the corruption) if the alarmists refused to mend their ways – why suspend publishing in the meantime? Even if Anthony is involved in major preparations for an exclusive story, it still doesn’t explain why guest posters are being put on hiatus. All will be revealed of course, but as I said: very strange.
I wonder if something has happened to compromise the security of the site and its commenters? And if so, is there a Gleick-like figure about to be exposed once the security hole has been plugged?

Thanks for the Link!
Sorry for the delay, Lubos, your comment was in my spam bucket.
No prob! I just found out what the project most likely is. I would bet 1:1 that it’s related to NOAA and Heartland and user interfaces. Click my link to learn details…
Well, I hope it demonstrates something significant. This is a lot of hype.
I have always thought the remaining climategate e-mails were going to be the most damning of them all. We may see even US administration get caught up in this. I think the speculation was the remaining e-mails were locked down for protection purposes. Now for the speculation….. I think this all has to do with Mann getting ready to sue Steyn/NRO. It’s one thing to play a tough guy on twitter but it’s another to lawyer-up and take a step that could financially ruin a person. This may have been the last straw for whomever holds the encryption key. How much you wanna bet Mann may have a lot more worries than a lawsuit come Monday?
Ooooooooooooo
If this scenario is the case… wear protective gear. Heads will explode. I have already cleared my day for Sunday. I really think it’s something epic, or Anthony wouldn’t release it on Sunday. He wants it on every blog and twitter account for Monday. As with all press dealings.. If you want it to have less of a impact, you drop it on Friday. If you want maximum coverage.. first of the week.
Ahaaaaaa……………….
(Hey James, first post here. Couldn’t resist this story. I posted this at Steve’s. This was my guess before reading any other speculation, here or Lubos or Bishop)
Well whatever the WUWT announcement it is, Anthony sure has mastered how to keep us in suspense. My own two theories …
(1) … Climategate event (key to zipped email and code, or FOIA identity)
(2) … Legal action by Mann against websites including WUWT
I haven’t yet looked at other sites for clues. Let’s see if we can reason this out from his own words …
That phrase “Something’s happened” is reminiscent of the Climategate I and II event for sure but not completely. “Broad global interest” would seem to reinforce this theory while excluding some local WUWT incident (stalker) or family health issue but does not rule out some broad legal action perhaps by Mann or his sycophants. That word “unprecedented” is the one clue that points away from a Climategate event as it has already happened twice so it really does not seem to apply to a Climategate, unless he is mis-using it or intentionally trying to throw us off the scent!
The phrase “magnitude of this event” again points to a LARGE Climategate type revelation or something that SERIOUSLY affects WUWT itself, he is returning to very intense adjectives which Anthony does not throw around lightly. The phrase “much to my dismay” I am taking as being applied to canceling the vacation, nothing more. More importantly leaning to (1): Since Anthony said “I can go on vacation trips another time” it implies an extended period of time is required like moderating the forum during Climategate(s) which would NOT be necessary if it was a mere legal action (no reason not to go on vacation anyway).
Talking about “Media outlets” places another vote on the Climategate side of the ledger to me. This is really leaning to (1) because the fact that he has a set time (3:00 pm EST Sunday) also seems to point to this as it tells me the announcement is completely under his control with no danger of 3rd party leaks (announcement of a legal action would not be completely under his control).
I’m gonna have to go with number (1) considering the current clues, but instinct tells me this is still a coin toss!
FOIA’s identity is still unknown.
Maybe one of the Team confesses?
ooooo… that would be hilarious.
Apart from Climategate 3 another piece of speculation is that someone has leaked very damning and sensitive information to him. This piece of information may be evidence that catches these charlatans red-handed doing the dirty deeds.

Ohhhh I hope!
WOAP!!!!
Blade! Good to see you here! I do believe this will be a positive announcement, because of his mention and appeal to the media outlets. Well, positive for skeptics. Again, and I could be wrong, I don’t think it would be of the climategate variety because of the way he’s handled the last two events.
The time sensitivity is another clue. Taken alone, this would suggest, to me, as a publishing event. (Things are under a zero media rule until official release type of thing) …. but it’s all supposition for me.
Well done! Great points!
What weight do you place on Mr Watts usage of the word “controversial “?
” That word “unprecedented” is the one clue that points away from a Climategate event as it has already happened twice so it really does not seem to apply to a Climategate…”
Hey Blade! If you compare 14 million email, to 5 thousand, it begins to look ‘unprecedented’ again.
And Anthony would need time, and staff, to sift through it all. Of course I am only guessing…
Sorry, that should have read “1/4 million email”.
Could part of that zip file be data?
Hey Kim! I’m no computer expert, my studies were Earth Sciences, but I would guess it could be.

Thank you
That has me very curious. I wonder if AW may already have the e-mails. I imagine he may be burning the midnight oil to peruse all possible goodies. It might not be that hard though. Whoever has had this massive file, has sure to have gone over them and may be able to direct AW to some of the more damning ones. It’s still a task that would probably take a toll on a person.
No time for emails, Mr Watts says.
IF it contains some data….maybe Mr Watts and Misters M&M are data busting?
Who ya gonna call?
Hey Kim! There would also be legal ramifications to consider, that would also eat up time. And I chalk the use of the word ‘controversial’ up to how each side views the release of these email, and those who are part of that process.
But it could be something else, such as a CERN announcement, and I could be completely wrong.

Oh, I am not too concerned about that . My problem is that I have become habituated to getting new posts to think about and they have dried up for now. My routine has been broken, the structure has gone from my life. I want structure *grin*
“Our Sunday would be CERNS Monday?”
They are about eight hours ahead of us (USA), so unless Anthony is planning a midnight premier, I would say no.

Anthony has caused an incredible amount of interest with this action. It will have to be something big to live up to the hype by silence. After reading his wording carefully, I don’t think it is his announcement. The announcement is dictating his vacation plans. If it is someone else that is announcing, then Anthony has advanced warning. He may even have advanced copy but the timeline is not of Anthony’s choosing.
Yep! He just received this, whatever it is, recently.
Harry or Briffa tells Mr Watts he’s FOIA?
UPDATE: I’ve been advised by concerned friends that speculation on the nature of this announcement has gotten out of hand in the blogosphere, and that was not my intent. My intent was to give me time to work on something very important without the distraction of this blog, emails/twitter/facebook, etc.
As many of you know, running WUWT is a monumental task which I could not do without the help of many people. Even so, it still requires my constant attention.
First, I am well. This isn’t a health issue for me or my family.
Second, my announcement has nothing to do with FOIA issues or other sorts of political or social theories being bandied about on other blogs.
It does however have something to do with one of my many projects, and it has important implications that I’m sure everyone will want to know about.
I greatly appreciate all the concern and interest, and I look forward to being able to share all my work on Sunday. – Anthony
Thank you Mr Watts.
BUT I won’t apologize for speculational fun
I hope you understand.
Lol, yeh, was a hoot!
I enjoyed it
And I did start it as a funny.
Exactly.
For me the biggest curiosity is still: regardless of the soon-to-be-broken big news – why the hiatus on new posts from guest posters until noon Sunday?
The idea that it’s simply a case of “all hands on deck” to plough through a new cache of Climategate emails just doesn’t hold water for me. Guest posters and trusted friends might well be *asked* for their help – and several may be beavering away data-mining and writing their own pieces as we speak. But to be *barred* from posting other stuff for 48 hours goes against the spirit of WUWT and its typically libertarian values.
No – I think that “something’s happened” (to quote Watts directly) to *force* Anthony into a position whereby further posts are simply out of the question for the next couple of days. As speculated in my last comment: a security breach maybe? Or maybe this unprecedented action is being taken on legal advice? Or is the publishing hiatus simply a way of heightening publicity for maximum impact when the story breaks, such is the story’s importance? Has an influential figure been given an ultimatum upon which he or she has until 12 noon PST Sunday to come clean/set things straight before being inevitably exposed? Or is Anthony planning his coming-out ceromony? A pre-op Antonia Watts maybe? Arrrggh! It’s infuriating to be kept in suspenders like this!
Oh wait, it seems I’m getting carried away. I see from Watts’ own words now that the reason for the hiatus is merely “to give [Watts] time to work on something very important without the distraction of [his] blog, emails/twitter/facebook, etc.” So it is gender reassignment surgery after all!
You are bad
His suspenders are improperly attached.
Ha ha ha ha
(In hopeful anticipation of Climategate III, some folks were asking about possible data in the ALL.7z archive. Here is some quick research I did last winter …)
So here is what we *do* know about the archive all.7z which was included within the Climategate II zip file in November 2011 …
The files (not including the README) are sequentially numbered like exported emails would be, from the lowest #636,048,969 to the highest #1,258,124,051 (commas inserted by me) with many missing numbers between, but many ARE in fact consecutively sequential. For example there are long runs of consecutive numbers like #849,644,751 straight thru #849,644,770. This could indicate an ongoing conversation or perhaps it means a complete dump of a certain user. It is mere speculation though at this early date.
The all.7z archive contains a total 220,246 files (+ one README) which are password protected (encrypted). Presumably one password is all that is needed to extract the whole folder because that is normally how one uses the feature when creating an archive.
The smallest file is 86 bytes (likely indicating pure text in a very short email). In fact the vast majority of them are small ranging up to just a few KB in size.
The largest 392 files range from 100,089 bytes (100 KB) all the way to the largest file which is 2,854,527 bytes (2.85 MB). In fact, those largest 392 files (less than 1% of archive) total to 128.57 MB all by themselves. If you plot the size distribution it might vaguely resemble a hockey stick!
Almost no amount of plain text will total in MB in size. Even long email messages with lots of ‘reply quoting’ would struggle to be more than a few KB or tens of KB (ten thousand characters).
So yes, there is data in them there hills. It will be found in the form of attachments to the standard emails encoded into plain text using the MIME format (just as the previous emails were). Pulling out the attachments should be simple barring any data glitches that could have occurred at the time of export from the UEA servers to whatever media they wound up on. This should be interesting.
Hey! Thank You!!!

I too was hoping for a certain 32 character keyphrase, but from Anthony’s update I think I will be disappointed.
On the other hand if FOIA ever quietly sends that keyphrase to Anthony it’d probably destroy him. He’d burn out from overwork and his eyeballs would turn into hockey sticks.
Okay, here’s my speculation. He’s going to release a study he did. It will demonstrate and demolish the legitimacy of the altered temps.
How does that jive with:
Results of any sceptical (WUWT) study will be attacked by Warmists, no matter how robust.
Whatever the announcement, Anthony should have just kept quiet until Sunday and just release it with the start of the headline as:

Anthony received his galley proofs Friday with the usual requirement to return them in 48 h (i.e., Sunday noon). The editor states the paper has been accepted for publication. It’s the follow-on to Fall et al. It shows an unequivocal falsification of a central tenet of AGW theory.
He couldn’t plan for it because editors always return the galleys just before (sometimes just after) you leave for vacation. Check. He has to shut down the blog because he has to read every word himself. Check. It’s not FOIA but it is “one of my projects”. Check.”
Posted by Lance Wallace over at CA.
I think Lance is right.
This is the first guess I think has real teeth.
Is it normal for the 48-hr thing on the galleys? That’s not true of any journal I’ve worked with.
-Scott
My thoughts… The journals I’ve published in don’t set a 48 hour deadline to proof a draft submission – what Lance is calling a galley proof. The only real deadlines imposed are the monthly submission deadlines. If you don’t meet the deadline, the paper gets published next month (assuming you meet next month’s deadline).
Anthony alludes that what he is going to announce was unexpected and he decided to cancel his vacation. I wouldn’t cancel my family’s vacation to meet a journal deadline, I would just publish the next month.
My favored theory is Anthony has received some sort of business opportunity and is working on moving his web site to a new platform or starting up a new web site.
The opportunity came up unexpected. Check. He has to shut down his current site and enlist the help of his moderators to move the site or bring up a new one. Check. It is newsworthy. Check. Possibly controversial – I can think of several reasons why. Check. It’s one of his projects (remember his call for guest writers last week because of a big project he was focused on). Check. Time to re-home a domain from one server to another or establish a new domain and be able to reliably link to it – up to 48 hours. Check. The best time to re-home or bring up a new domain – the weekend. Check.
Interesting. Sadly, it’s rational, so, we must reject it out of hand. Worse, it isn’t sexy or exciting, so we must doubly reject it out of hand!
How’s Hank been?
Busier than usual. Ironically, I have a huge study we’re trying to finish up for a journal submission deadline August 2nd. I’m working this weekend on the analytics for the paper – crossing every “i” and dotting every “t”. Ha!
As busy as I am I had to get my daily fix at suyts though. I’ll be around a lot more after the 2nd.
Congrats, and make it right! I’ll yak at you when you get it done! You know, I’d have no objections to advertising a journal submission regardless of the subject. In fact, I’d like to once it’s published.
Thanks James. My work does keep me off the streets and out of trouble
And you keep up the good work on your site. It’s getting a lot of notice.
My guess is a positive connection between the conclusions of the Fall et all paper and the upcoming results of the BEST project, apparently to be released this week.
What ever it is, I’m sure it will be nice gold nugget against alarmism.
Amusing [alarmists are dumbasses] excitement aside, anyone with PR experience will know that noon Sunday is a bizarre time for a press conference or equivalent event. In this case, it appears to be an attempt to get a first cut of media/blog coverage while the scientists are hard to reach. OTOH the media really dislikes being manipulated like that, as we saw with “Climategate II.”
==================================================
Moderator note: I thought about letting that pass. I don’t like to moderate here. And, you are invited to engage in any conversation here. But, I couldn’t help but note the classless actions of coming here with your stupidity. No one denies anything other than alarmists.
Lol….. the media hates being manipulated? The media is a party girl passed around by any leftist or totalitarian group that exists today.
You are too kind. I see the MSM as a dime store hooker, ready to go down on anyone that pays the price (blind obedience to the cause).
Yeh….. you’re right.
Anthony has challenged Kentti Linkola or Hans Joachim Schellnhuber to a dual with two-by-fours in a dark cellar, naming seconds as Lord Monckton of Brenchley or Willi Eschenbach? Godzilla, thou shouldst be living at this hour!

For an announcement to be this significant my guess is that it could be a major political ‘volte face’ by a major politician such as President Barrack Obama who has an eye on the elections in November. How about writing his script?! Guessing about email leaks or pure scientific reasons like an announcement from CERN wouldn’t wash with the CAGW crowd.
Well, I just hope it’s substantive and substantial and not a damp squib (= failed soggy firework)!
Quite a loud tease, in any case …
I hope so, too.
Well, now it’s out! A very dry, loud, and spectacular squib! De facto proof that US temperature records have been systematically distorted by UHI and post-facto adjustments. Temperature trends have been at least doubled, perhaps multiplied by 12X in the records by NOAA.
The entire AGW-CAGW system has been feeding on garbage in, and has produced further rotted and decayed garbage out.
I think it’s going to take a while, but if it survives review, it will be very significant.
I think Brian just meant it was not lurid and scandalous! In other words, it was Anthony at this finest.
Hey Brian! Aint it grand that scientists are finally rediscovering UHI?
This absolutely astounds me. I don’t know a soul who does not already know about UHI.
What next? Rediscovering gravity?
It’s nice they try and quantify it for us, but please… leave off the hundredths of a degree measurements, and lets simply rule out CO2 once and for all.
Phil;
See above. Damp squib = failed firework. Dry squib = successful firework.
Just to go all out in speculation…
Plot #1 Anthony has uncovered The IPCC plan to nuke Greenland and precipitate the collapse of the Ice sheet prognosticated by Pachauri.
Plot #2 IPCC has offered Anthony an even more official position in its ranks in an attempt to subvert the entire issue of skepticism.

“What Anthony is going to publish tomorrow is not of the flashy fire-works variety, rather it is a tectonic sort of event. Lots of people are going to be, shall we say, non-plussed? Could even get bloody. Stay tuned, and thank you for your support. -REP]”
Yep! Yep! I saw that too….
If it’s something like that, then I doubt it’s just the NOAA temperature viewing thing… Also, he cancelled his vacation for this, making me think it was unscheduled/surprising, so again I doubt it’s the temperature viewer and will be disappointed if it is.
Guess I’ll just wait the few minutes to find out.
-Scott
Could it be that the website (WUWT) has been purchased by a company or person with big bucks that will allow Anthony to work full-time with a staff. And that publishing had to be suspended until after the deal closed?
Wouldn’t that be something! But, I think it will be something less dramatic.
Or he is going on air? http://dnsquery.org/whois/wuwt.tv
Now, that’s interesting!
Probably not. The domain was registered in May of 2010. It is common for popular web sites to “tie up” the different gTLD’s (generic top level domains like com, net, or tv) to prevent others from running a knock-off site. He also tied up wuwt.net and wuwt.org with a private registration in 2008. They both resolve to the same IP address, meaning they’ve been parked to an unused page at a hosting company (probably an affiliate of the registrar company), which is commonly done.
I noted that none of the wuwt domains have had changes made to them in the past few months, including his main domain at wuwt.com.
Its probably a very big warmista scientist who has decided to spill the beans
I still think he has accepted a business proposition which will change how he’s running WUWT. That’s worth delaying a vacation and working out the terms with the business entity.
Decent guess, but is that “tectonic”? That’s more the “flashy, fireworks variety”.

James – now that the press release is out, might I suggest a new thread to discuss it hear? My early thoughts are that this is of moderate impact, but probably not worth putting the whole WUWT on hold for 2 days.

Agreed, and agreed, but, there’s a bit of history as to what he just did. I can’t wait to hear the howls. New thread coming up shortly!
I can’t wait to hear the howls.
